Cool woodlands and exceptional natural vistas on Woosamonsa Ridge Preserve are now easily accessible on Hopewell’s Woosamonsa Road, where a new sign and kiosk and a new gravel parking area invite the public to traverse three loop trails on Pennington Mountain. Metasequoia glyptostroboides leaves are opposite, 1–3 cm (0.39–1.18 in) long, and bright fresh green, turning a foxy reddish brown in fall. The pollen cones are 5–6 mm (0.20–0.24 in) long, produced on long spikes in early spring; they are produced only on trees growing in regions with hot summers.

This preserve has deep, wooded canyons and rolling grassy hills as well as important habitat for California red-legged frogs and California tiger salamanders. The property contains a historic stone house and was a campsite for the Anza Expedition. The Authority partners with The Nature Conservancy to purchase its first property, the 3,524-acre Palassou Ridge. First funding grants under the “20% Funding for Urban Open Spaces” program go to the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara.
